What does the 3D structure of protein look like? And what does this mean about its function? For decades, structural biologist Udo Heinemann has explored these questions at the Max Delbrück Center. Now, the German Society for Crystallography is honoring his life’s work.

Therapy that is tailored to patients’ diseases is largely unaffordable. Three Max Delbrück Center postdocs have won GO-Bio Initial grants to simplify and improve personalized therapies. They aim to bring down costs to enable more widespread access.

The German Research Foundation (DFG) has announced that biochemist Ana Pombo from the Max Delbrück Center is among this year’s winners of the Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz Prize. With a grant of €2.5 million, the Leibniz Prize is one of the highest endowed research prizes in Germany.

For the next two years, Abeer Hassan will be a visiting postdoctoral fellow in Gary Lewin’s lab at Max Delbrück Center – going back and forth between Rehovot and Berlin. Nella Christie Delva joins the lab of Annette Hammes-Lewin’s as a Fulbright scholar. Over the next few months, she will study how environmental stressors cause genetic and neural changes in the brain during development, which can lead to mental health disorders.

Simon Haas has been awarded the Berlin-Brandenburg Academy of Sciences and Humanities (BBAW) Prize for the promotion of cancer research, sponsored by the Monika Kutzner Foundation. His outstanding research focuses on the causes and the development of new concepts for the treatment of blood cancer.

Wenhan Luo received a two-year Humboldt Fellowship to continue his research in Gary Lewin’s Molecular Physiology of Somatic Sensation Lab. Together, they aim to understand how naked mole rats navigate.

Three researchers at Max Delbrück Center – Sofia Forslund, Friedemann Paul, and Nikolaus Rajewsky – are among the most Highly Cited Researchers in the world in 2024, making the list two years in a row. Germany ranks fourth of countries and regions, behind the U.S., mainland China and the U.K.

The German Stem Cell Network (GSCN) recognizes Mina Gouti as an outstanding stem cell researchers on her way to expanding basic research and opening up new avenues for therapeutic options. She receives the GSCN 2024 Hilde Mangold Award for her pioneering work on human neuromuscular organoids.

Gabriele Schiattarella researches the mechanisms of heart muscle weakness at the Max Delbrück Center and Deutsches Herzzentrum der Charité (DHZC). Now the International Society for Heart Research, a highly respected professional society, has named him an "Outstanding Investigator."
