Sommer AG 1999

Campus with tradition

Professor Thomas Sommer, Scientific Director (interim)

After the "Wende" (eng: turning point), the Campus Berlin-Buch became a part of the international research community. Thomas Sommer therefore considers the fall of the Berlin Wall on November 9, 1989 as an incredibly important day in the history of the #mdcBerlin.

Born and raised in West-Berlin, professor Thomas Sommer earned his PhD in 1988 at the Max-Planck-Institute for Molecular Genetics and the Freie Universität Berlin. In 1993, Sommer came to Buch and started his own research group, investigating "Intracellular Proteolysis". He is also the institute's interim Scientific Director since May 2019. It's the second time – after 2016 – that he has taken over this position.
