Scientific Researcher – Method Developments for In situ Structural Biology (F/M/D)

Berlin-Buch | Max Delbrück Center

The Max Delbrück Center for Molecular Medicine in the Helmholtz Association aims to transform tomorrow’s medicine through our discoveries of today. At locations in Berlin-Buch, Berlin-Mitte, Heidelberg and Mannheim, our researchers harness interdisciplinary collaboration to decipher the complexities of disease at the systems level – from molecules and cells to organs and the entire organism. Through academic, clinical, and industry partnerships, as well as global networks, we strive to translate biological discoveries into applications that enable the early detection of deviations from health, personalize treatment, and ultimately prevent disease. First founded in 1992, the Max Delbrück Center today inspires and nurtures a diverse talent pool of 1,800 people from over 70 countries. We are 90 percent funded by the German federal government and 10 percent by the state of Berlin.

The Kudryashev Group at the MDC specializes in understanding of structural and molecular mechanisms of membrane proteins and their complexes. Using the arsenal of cryo-EM, and integrative structural biology approaches, the group investigates how membrane proteins function in their native environments: membranes or cells. Furthermore, we develop computational tools to streamline data processing to make it faster and at higher resolution. Recently, we started working on DNN approaches to further optimize the process of structural determination of macromolecules from cryo-ET data.
Project Description:

This is a broad call for a Scientific Researcher interested in structural biology, cryo-EM, DNNs, membrane proteins and drug discovery.

Job Description

Project Description
A Scientific Researcher with a technical background would develop or incorporate deep neural networks into the workflows for structural analysis of macromolecules from cryo-ET data. A Scientific Researcher with interest in structure and function of membrane proteins will be offered several projects with highly medically important membrane proteins with an aim to understand their functions and potentially develop interacting partners. Furthermore, we have interests in understanding molecular architecture of cells which we approach by cryo-FIB milling, cryo-ET and integrative structural biology. Scientific Researchers with experience or interest in structure-based protein design are also encouraged to apply.

Requirements

Eligible candidates must have a master’s degree.
To apply, please submit a single PDF containing your CV (2 pages max, including 2–3 contacts for reference letter requests) and a motivation letter of what you would like to do. Informal inquiries are welcome.
